Got a Story Idea for Us? Make it Newsworthy!

A big part of my joining USANA's awesome Social Media and Public Relations team was to find all the great stories spread the word. Between products, Associates, community involvement, green initiatives and health and wellness, there's always something to talk about.

Still, it's sometimes tough knowing everything about what's going on, so the PR and Social Media department needs YOU. Tell us what's up in your lives. I'm not just talking USANA-related stuff, either. I'm talking if you think you've got something going on that's newsworthy, let us know about it.

So What's Newsworthy?
Ooooh, there's that word: "Newsworthy." What makes the news? Different journalists will give you different definitions of "news," and they won't always agree. But most will agree on the elements that help them decide whether something is newsworthy. Here are questions to ask yourself:
  • Is it new?
  • Is it unusual or unique?
  • Is it timely?
  • Is it controversial?
  • Will it make people angry?
  • Will it touch their emotions?
  • Does it affect people's health?
  • Does it right a wrong?
  • Does it affect children?
  • Does it affect people's finances?
  • Does it affect a lot of people?
  • Does it identify a new trend?
  • Is this a local story with national implications? Or is there a local angle to a broader story?
These questions all boil down to the "Who really cares?" factor. I know that's blunt, but when thinking of what is newsworthy, stop to ask yourself why someone who is busy with life should stop and take notice. If you can answer "yes" to the questions above, then you're already on your way to helping us take your story to the next level and approach the media on behalf of USANA.
